Imitate The Love of Christ

Tuesday, May 24th, 2016

TODAY’S VERSE
Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ.
Ephesians 5:1-2

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You have heard it said, “Imitation is the best form of flattery.” Have you ever watched a child imitate their father or mother? They are so serious. They pick up subtle nuances that we would never expect them to. They do not judge, they just act out what was acted out before them. This is what we have been asked to do. We are to imitate the love of Christ. We are to love the way He loved. Paul describes that kind of love. He says that love is patient, kind, not jealous, boastful, proud or rude. Love doesn’t demand its own way, is not irritable and doesn’t keep a record of wrong doing. Love endures, doesn’t lose faith, never gives up and is always hopeful. If we want to imitate Christ, we must love. Might Christ help us imitate His love today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, help me to imitate You in everything I do. Help me especially love the way You love. Guide me, direct me, fill me with Your Holy Spirit so I can follow Your example with those I meet today. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Living On Purpose

Friday, March 4th, 2016

TODAY’S VERSE
“I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God.
Genesis 45:4-8

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Joseph had a dream that God had a purpose for him to fulfill. In it his family was bowing down to him. It was a purpose apparently with significance. His brothers were jealous of Joseph and in a rage, sold him to slavery. He worked as a slave, went to prison, but everywhere he went, God favored him. He believed that God had a purpose for him and this deep belief carried him through each day. Finally, at the end of the story, there was a famine. God led Joseph to store up grain for the famine and so when others were starving, Egypt was able to survive. Hearing that there was grain in Egypt, his brothers went to buy some. It was here that they were reunited with Joseph. When Joseph revealed himself, they were horrified. Joseph shared with them the key to his success, to his survival, to his extraordinary life. He believed that God was in charge and had a purpose for him. He said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.” What about you? God has a purpose for you. Will you live on purpose for Him?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You that You have a divine purpose for my life. I ask You to guide me in the direction of that purpose. Help me to have the faith that Joseph did in trusting that you had a purpose for him when the times were good and when they were bad. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

After God’s Own Heart

Wednesday, November 25th, 2015

TODAY’S VERSE
“The one thing I ask of the LORD, the thing I seek most, is to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, delighting in the LORD’s perfections and meditating in his Temple. – My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘LORD, I am coming.’”
Psalms 27:4, 8

“God said, ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.’”
Acts 13:22

TODAY’S THOUGHT
David was a shepherd boy who knew and loved God. Because of David’s heart toward God, God called David to be king of all Israel. And a great king he was. But more than a king, David remained a man that sought after the heart of God. I can imagine David in his palace, a long way from the cold nights in the fields with the sheep, wishing he was back in the fields with the stars in the sky, playing his harp and worshiping God. How his heart cried out, “I want to live in the house of the Lord, delighting in Him!” And that is what he did. In fact, his heart did become a house of God. From his heart he wrote the Psalms. What an offering of worship and praise to God. God would invite us to do the same. What is in your heart? Is it a home for God? Is it a Temple of praise and thanksgiving? If not, it can be. Like David, God comes to you and says, “Come and talk with me.” When He does, respond like David and say, “Lord, I am coming.” Today, you can begin to be a “person after God’s own heart.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You have bid me to come to You. I am coming even now. Like David, I want to be a person after Your own heart. I come today and ask You to take my heart and make it Your home. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Marathon

Monday, July 27th, 2015

TODAY’S VERSE
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
Hebrews 12:1 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Life is not a sprint. It is a long distance race. However, with all the stress, all the demands of life, in our “have to have it NOW!” world we live in, it feels like a sprint. But that is the deception of what has been called the “Tyranny of the urgent!” The seemingly urgent interruptions keep us off focus. They creates stress, worry and fear. We run around like Chicken Little crying, “The sky is falling!” Yet all the while God is still on His Throne. He knows all about us. We are still in His loving arms. Instead of continually reacting and attempting to cope, we need to take away those things that interrupt our spirituality. We need to get rid of habits that lead us in the wrong direction or keep tripping us up. We need to pray and manage our time rather than being a slave to it. We need to prioritize our activities and make sure we are doing the things that keep us spiritually alive. The author of Hebrews writes, “We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” It’s all about the focus. We focus on Jesus. Today, see the long journey before you and decide to travel it with Jesus one day at a time.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, help me keep my focus on You. Help me live one day at a time, knowing that I am on this glorious journey with You. Help me rid myself of whatever it is that is hindering me. Help me Lord I pray.
AMEN

TODAY’S VERSE

“I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, – But we must hold on to the progress we have already made.”
Philippians 3:13, 16 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We find ourselves in so many difficult situations. Often it is so hard to discern God’s will. I could easily spend all my time asking “Why?” I could spend endless hours full of bitterness, fear or sorrow. But then what? What has this accomplished? Isn’t faith about trusting God even when things don’t go the way we think they should? Isn’t it His will for us to let go, trust Him and move on? But we want closure. There must be justice, revenge or something that has a semblance of fairness. Who says? Who started that rumor? Life is not fair. Paul said that we see reality as if we were looking through a dark piece of glass. Things don’t always make sense. But God does. And the best advice anyone can give you was given by Paul. He writes, “I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead.” There was too much to do, to much grace to live with, too much love of God to celebrate. Why should we spend all our time looking backwards? Instead, Paul forced himself to look ahead. Why? Because if we are going to make it in this life Paul says, “we must hold on to the progress we have already made.” Today, hang on to the progress and maturity God has blessed you with. Let go of the past, let it go and press on. Return to joy and live the life God has for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me press on and not get stuck in the past. Help me look forward to the life You have for me. Help me see Your love, mercy, grace and peace. Help me pursue You and all that You have for me. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Merry Christmas

Wednesday, December 25th, 2013

TODAY’S VERSE

This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Hebrews 4:15-16 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How many times do we need mercy and grace in our life? It is so good to know that God knows all about your weaknesses. He empathizes with your situation. He overcame temptation and the trials that test your soul. Because of His great love for you He bids you to come to Him with boldness. Come right into His throne room and receive all the mercy and grace you will ever need. Today, don’t let anything stop you. He loves you, He knows you, come and let Him know your needs.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, I am so thankful that You understand my weaknesses. I bring them to You and ask for Your grace and mercy to forgive me and help me live for You.
AMEN

Inner Strength

Friday, July 26th, 2013

TODAY’S VERSE

“I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.”
Ephesians 3:16-17 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Our inward journey greatly affects our outward one. How we live is dependant on how we think and feel. If we live in the truth, if we know that we are loved, if we have the resilience to bounce back from painful emotions we will find our outward journey one of peace and joy, the abundant life Christ talked about. However, if we allow life with it’s trauma, to sicken our inner life, we will find ourself living with festering emotional wounds, lies and dysfunctional behavior. Paul had the cure to an unhealthy inner life. He believed that God, with everything He is, wants to influence everything we are. Therefore he prayed that we would allow the Holy Spirit’s unlimited resources to empower us and give us inner strength. He prayed that we would trust Christ and let Him live at home in our heart. He prayed that we would let our roots grow deep down into God’s love. If we do these things, Paul promises that God Himself will keep us Spiritually strong. Today, choose to discipline yourself and strengthen your inner self through prayer, meditation and reflection.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, please empower me with inner strength through Your Holy Spirit. Please make Your home in my heart and help my roots grow deep down into Your love. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Today’s Mission

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

Today’s Mission

TODAY’S VERSE
“Don’t you know or understand even yet? Are your hearts too hard to take it in? ‘You have eyes—can’t you see? You have ears—can’t you hear?’ Don’t you remember anything at all?”
Mark 8: 17-18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is a mystery but it seems God has placed His creation in cycles. The sun rises, the sun sets. The seasons come and go. We take a breath and it is followed by another. I eat today and tomorrow I must do it again. And so it goes with faith. We can’t live on yesterday’s manna. We must trust God to meet today’s needs and then do it all over again the next day. And so in today’s passage it seems that Jesus is rebuking His disciples for lacking faith in His provision. But as I thought more about Jesus’ reaction I think Jesus’ frustration goes much deeper than that. Sure the disciples were worrying about food, and Jesus found it appalling, especially after He had just fed the masses that came to hear His teaching. But it wasn’t the food that frustrated Jesus. I think it was the lack of passion in the disciples that perplexed Him. They were talking about bread. People were being healed, demons cast out, repentance preached. And yet it seemed that the disciples were oblivious to the mission Jesus had. Their hearts were hard. They had eyes but did not see. They had ears but did not hear. If they really did see and hear I think they would have been begging Jesus to go to more towns. There were more people to reach. More people that needed the message of love. More that needed healing. Heaven itself would not be able to stop them. But, like us, their new day was pressing in. Their needs, their plans, their concerns overshadowed Jesus’ agenda. What about you and I? What consumes us? What have we seen? What have we heard? What have we forgotten? Today, might we see with the eyes of Christ and move with His heart planted deep in our chest.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Oh Jesus, I confess I have had a front row seat and somehow turn around and forget all the miracles You have done. I let Your power and goodness escape my mind and make decisions as if You did not exist. Forgive me. Today revive my heart. Fill me with Your Spirit that I might live for You.
AMEN

Be Still

Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013

Be Still

TODAY’S VERSE
“This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: ‘Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it.’”
Isaiah 30:15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It seems like the last thing we want to do is slow down. We say we believe in God and want His direction in our life but we never stop to listen to Him. We go from event to event like unguided drones, on a mission but flying without direction. Isaiah wanted to make a point. He refers to God as the “Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel” hoping that we would listen. And what is it that God says? He says that it is only in returning and resting in Him that we have any chance of making it in this life. He assures us that it is in quietness and the confidence from time spent with God that we get the strength we need for our journey. Don Postema in his book “Space For God” shares that a person needs “silence, if their words are to mean anything; reflection, if their actions are to have any significance; contemplation, if they are to see the world as it really is; prayer, if they are going to be conscious of God, if they are to ‘know God and enjoy God forever.’” Today, seek silence, reflection, contemplation and prayer. Seek God and you will find that in quietness with Him you will find strength.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, I come to You and quiet my heart. I need You. I need to hear Your voice. Help me find the strength I need as I seek to spend time with You in contemplation and prayer.
AMEN
